Now my life is moving in circles
My life used to stretch before me,
A long line of to-dos.
Get a driver’s license.
Get through high school.
Graduate from college.
Get a job.
Get married.
Have kids.
Now my life is moving in circles
Light candles, tend the fire,
read under cozy blankets.
Fly down a mountain,
feel the wind on my cheeks,
Laugh at pink noses,
Sip cider from steaming cups.
Delight in the first warm rays of sun,
Watch water drip from icicles
filling up rivers.
Listen to waterfalls roar, swollen with snow.
run on muddy roads,
feet splashing.
pussy willows bloom,
snow melts into the earth.
The first robin calls,
I fall to my knees-
the scent of fresh cut grass
overwhelms me.
Reminding me to be thankful for my life.
Grill hamburgers, wear shorts before it is warm enough for shorts.
Whisper prayers as I plant seeds,
each patch of dirt filled with hope.
Sandy clothes,
hauling to and from the lake,
Tending bug bites and sunburn,
I stay up late, wake early.
Every day feels like the first day.
Every day teeming with energy.
Sticky with watermelon,
ice cream melting fast.
See all the faces I love.
Eat tomatoes right from the garden.
Taste the sunshine in each bite.
Fill my counters with bouquets.
Watch the moon rise.
Greet cooler air with a dance.
Sharpen pencils, dig out backpacks.
Wonder how my children have grown another year older.
Giggle at their haircuts.
Bake my Grandma’s apple cake.
Use as many apples as I have.
Line pumpkins up on the porch.
Warm myself with soup and squash.
Jump in the leaves,
wander trails by flashlight.
Watch the fire crackle in the night.
Behold the first snowfall.
Hold the snowflakes in my hand.
Find ways to show love-
More than any package can convey.
Rest.
Listen.
Remember to be thankful for my life.
Begin again.
