I’m training for my old lady body.

In May, one of the poets I follow on instagram posted a poem I found inspiring. The first two lines of the poem were inspired by the following tweet:

She then created a poem inspired by this tweet. This type of poetry is called an epigraph poem.
An epigraph poem takes the first line or two from another poet or writer as a springboard, followed by your own original work.

By borrowing just the first couple of lines, you're paying homage or referencing the original work, then expanding with your own voice and ideas. This type of collage poem can be a lot of fun! Here is Lauren Bowman’s epigraph poem.

Just like the poet did, I invite you to stick with the first two lines, then create your own rendition. (Or work from a different set of lines from her poem, or mine!) If you like the result, we’d love if you email it to us! We could share them anonymously next week. xo Amanda

Here is my rendition:

This phrase has now become  a mantra at Boreal Bliss. "We're training for our 90s." In a world obsessed with youth, we are working hard to embrace aging and all that entails.

“I’m training for my old lady body.

Dense bones. Strong muscles. A healthy heart.”

You can keep your sapling body; I want to be a mountain. Live oak limbs and black gum roots.

I want a base ample and unshakeable.

Thick and steady. Storm-ready.

Resolute.

I want skin intimite with the wind, the sun, the rain.

Weathered enough to tell stories. A testament to my strength.

I want bones trained to carry.

Veins that flow like rivers to my ocean of a heart.

You can keep your pre.

You can keep your new.

I want after.

I want profuse.

L.E. Bowman
