Introducing the BB Book & Movie Club

What: A book club committed to being better white allies

When: The second Monday of the month at 8pm via zoom

Why: We are committed to educating ourselves on a deeper level about systemic racism

ZOOM ZOOM: Meeting ID: 928 4296 2704

WHO: Rotating hosts. Feeling called to host? Reach out via email!

What does this have to do with yoga? At the heart of yoga is the practice of ahimsa, the sanskrit word for non-violence. We are committed to this principle and believe in being actively anti-racist.

But I don’t have time to read…

We get it. Join anyway. Join and listen to the conversation. We’ll provide summaries of the books. We are also going to do some documentaries, articles, and books with corresponding movies. “Just Mercy” and “The Hate U Give” are both movies. Audiobooks are great too!

The Lineup

For our first book we chose “So you want to talk about race” by Ijeoma Oluo. This book helps us understand how to have those difficult conversations about race, and we could all use help in that department right now. I enjoy following Ijeoma on IG and highly recommend! This book club will be hosted by Lindsey Ann-Dodge (thanks Lindsey!)

For our second book, we are going to read “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson. If you don’t want to read the book, you can rent it for free on Apple Movies right now! Book club will be hosted by Kristen Ferris (Thanks Kristen!)

The third book will be “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas. I picked this book because it’s ideal for adults to read with tweens and teens. We invite you to read (or watch) this book/movie with a child in your life and join the zoom call together. I am still looking for a host for this book, any adults out there with a tween/teen that would like to host?

For our October pick, Tracy Corcoran will guide us through “How to Be an Antiracist” by Ibram X. Kendi. In this book, Kendi imagines what life in an antiracist society might look like, and how we can help build it. (Thanks Tracy!)

We hope you’ll join us in the conversation. XO

P.S. Are you BIPOC and interested in our YTT? We are interested in providing scholarships and opportunity to BIPOC. Reach out!

Amanda Imes

Amanda seems to be most herself when reading, writing, planning or attending a theme party, traveling with her husband, visiting glaciers, dancing like a crazy woman, laughing, and when outside. She melts (and complains) when the thermostat exceeds 80 degrees and plans her life to avoid large crowds, traffic and big cities. She owns and operates a paddleboard outfitter in Duluth, SUPerior Paddle, with her husband and french bulldog Loki.

She is certified to teach yoga through Core Power yoga.

“As a teacher, I’ve found so many interesting new friends on the mat. Like anyone, I have bad days. Life breaks my heart sometimes. However, I always do my best to bring my best version of myself to class as a teacher. I know that some of my students might be having a difficult week too, and that one hour on the mat might just be the hour that turns their week around. I have yet to make it further than 45 seconds into a class with a bad attitude.

Teaching fulfills me. I leave class feeling joyful. That is what yoga (and writing) do for me - they save my life sometimes. They are my secret lifeline to joy, forgiveness, groundedness, serenity- to the truest version of myself.

Can’t wait to lead you in journaling practice, crafts, silliness, and an epic yoga sculpt dance party.”
